One of the most common questions we hear at our Beverly Hills Pilates studio is: “How often should I be doing Pilates?” The answer depends on your goals, experience level, and lifestyle, but here's a general guide to help you find the perfect Pilates routine for your desired results. And if you want to start seeing real results, the sweet spot is a minimum of 2 to 3 times per week—even for beginners! Consistency is key to feeling stronger, more flexible, and more balanced in your body.
Why 2 to 3 Times a Week is the Magic Number
At 2 to 3 sessions per week, your body gets the perfect mix of challenge and recovery. This frequency allows you to build strength, improve posture, and see noticeable changes in how you move and feel. It also helps you develop muscle memory, so each class builds on the last, creating steady progress.
Breaking It Down by Goals
1. For Beginners (2-3 Times a Week)
If you’re new to Pilates, start with at least two to three sessions per week. This allows your body to adapt, build foundational core strength, and develop proper form and technique without feeling overwhelmed. Initial soreness is typical - afterall you are doing a new type of workout and Pilates has a way of waking up muscles you probably have never felt before or never even knew you had! With 2-3 times a week you will also have plenty of time to recover between sessions. The more consistent you are, the faster you’ll feel the benefits!
2. For General Fitness & Toning (3-4 Times a Week)
If your goal is to sculpt and tone while improving flexibility, balance, core strength, and overall well-being, aim for three to four sessions per week. This frequency keeps your muscles engaged without overworking them. It also allows your body to recover between sessions while still making steady progress.
3. For Strength, Transformation & Advanced Practitioners (4-5 Times a Week)
If you’re looking for significant strength gains, to develop lean muscle, improved endurance, better postural alignment, and deeper body awareness, four to five times a week is ideal. Mixing reformer and tower work (or the other Pilates apparatus such as the chair, ladder barrel, or ped-o-pull) ensures you challenge your body while maintaining balance. Attending 4-5 classes a week is ideal for those who are committed to seeing noticable changes in their bodies and really feeling the difference in their strength and capabilities.
4. For Stress Relief & Rehabilitation (As needed and/or recommended)
If you’re using Pilates for stress relief or injury recovery, staying consistent with at least two sessions per week can be incredibly beneficial. Gentle, mindful movement can speed up recovery and improve mobility over time. Pilates is an excellent way to repair or recover from injuries as well as to prevent future injuries. Being low impact, Pilates can be done as often as desired and can even be practiced every day. Most importantly, listen to your body and always follow the guidance from your instructor, physical therapist, or doctor.
Why More Frequent Workouts Work Better?
Pilates is all about quality, controlled, low-impact movements that promote better strength and body awareness. A regular practice is more effective than sporadic sessions. It ensures that your body stays engaged, and you avoid the “start-over” feeling each session and the frustrations that your body is not changing or you are not getting desired results, simply because you are not putting in the required effort.
The Bottom Line:
No matter your fitness level, 2 to 3 Pilates sessions per week should be your baseline for noticeable results. More frequent practice only enhances the benefits! Our Beverly Hills studio offers personalized sessions to help you stay consistent and reach your goals. We also offer a variety of class types and focuses so you will never get bored or feel as if you are doing the same workouts each class. Pilates is a great way to get and stay in shape - it is both challenging and rewarding. With a regular practice, we promise you that you will feel stronger and better than you have ever felt. Pilates will not only transform your body, but it will completely change your life!
